Hello
Please excuse the cheesy photo; I will endeavor to change it as soon as I do another one, draped over my sewing machine.
My Story:
Hello, I'm Nicola Freeman,
About ten years ago, I attended a one-day course to learn the basics of free-motion embroidery and discovered a creative outlet that has kept me happily stitching ever since. I'd heard free-motion embroidery described as the "crack cocaine of the sewing world" and, whilst I couldn't possibly comment on that myself, I can certainly understand why people become hooked!
What I discovered very quickly was that I could draw far better with a sewing machine than I ever could with a pencil. Using fabric as my canvas and thread as my sketching tool, I create textile artworks that combine layered fabrics with free-motion embroidery to produce unique framed pieces full of texture, detail, and character.
Animals are my favourite subject, but inspiration can come from almost anywhere. I often find myself looking at something unexpected and thinking, "That would be an interesting challenge!" The creative process is as much about exploration as it is about the finished piece.
Many of the fabrics I use come from my ever-growing stash, including treasured fabrics inherited from my late mother. I love the idea that these fabrics can become part of something new and meaningful. Sustainability is also important to me, and I regularly alter, repair, and reinvent clothing, whether that's reshaping a neckline that's a little too snug or extending a favourite top to accommodate what I affectionately call my "middle-aged spread"!
Although I sometimes create collections or series of related work, no two pieces are ever identical. Every artwork is individually handmade, giving each one its own unique personality.
I hope my work sparks curiosity, encourages people to take a closer look, and brings a smile to their face. I love creating pieces that are quirky, whimsical, and perhaps a little unexpected.
I also welcome commission enquiries. If you have an idea for a bespoke textile artwork, I'd be delighted to discuss it with you and explore how we can bring it to life together.
Alongside my artwork, I'll be sharing my creative journey through my blog, where you can follow current projects, new ideas, works in progress, and the occasional stitching adventure.
